heureka(2009)

A collaboration with Christophe Vaillant and Ruth Weber. The object is a CNC milled partial nonlinear differential equation. The dynamics of the specifically chosen equation is structurally equivalent to neural networks and shows the time development of a linear array of oscillators. Next to the spontaneous synchronization chaotic oscillations can be observed. The spontaneous self-excitability of such an array of dynamic units is often found in natural systems and is a prerequisite for pattern formation. It also encapsulates poetic potential and gives room to manifold associations related to synchronized movement.
heureka is acompanied with the first proceedings of the New Academy of Artistic Sciences and includes three essays by Gerold Baier, Katerina Alexiou and Theodore Zamenopoulos, and Hans H. Diebner covering topics like the origin and meaning of the dynamical phenomena of synchronization, their connection to creativity and the relationship between artistic practice and scientific thinking. All photos were made by Till Bovermann.
